Little Squares of Strength Projec

Hello, I’m Fleur. Founder of the #littlesquaresofstrength project, crafter, mama to three little girls and wife to a big-hearted gardener boy. Making the best out of caravan life while we build our little home in the rolling countryside of Western Australia.

The #littlesquaresofstrength project came about because I felt a strong urge to start something creative that brought women together, as a community, to send love and kindness out into the world. As women, I believe that we are all beautiful, strong and incredible, but sometimes we don’t feel it! Sometimes our days and minutes can feel REALLY hard. Sometimes life can be so unfair. We’ve all had difficult days and chapters in our life. Some people have had to endure far more challenging times than others though. Some experiencing serious illness, losing someone dear to them, or the challenges of motherhood or family life. To be able to send some love and support to a woman who is struggling a little bit or needs a little encouragement sent their way, is something that so many of us would like to be able to do, and can do, through such a small gesture – #littlesquaresofstrength. The #littlesquaresofstrengthproject is about togetherness. Together we are using our hands, big and small, young and old, from all walks of life, from all parts of the world. Together we are joining hearts. Together we are crafting little squares. Little squares, symbolic of love and strength, and acknowledgement that we are all on this journey together. I join all of these squares together to make beautiful love-filled blankets to send to some of these special women. We want to let each of these women know how inspiring we think she is, and how incredible and strong she is, even though she may not feel it. We want to give her a blanket to wrap around her when she sits, to remind her every time she looks down at it, looking down at every little unique handcrafted square, that we are here in togetherness, sending her love and support. Beautiful and talented mama and artist Erin Bullock of @ohbabybird on Instagram, out of the kindness of her heart, has illustrated and printed this gorgeous “You are a beautiful strong incredible woman” card that will be sent along with each of the blankets.

I have created the #littlesquaresofstrength project to be something that is extremely diverse, and something that anyone anywhere can easily be a part of. All I ask is that you create a handmade square that measures 16cm x 16cm. You can knit, crochet, weave, sew, embroider, or stitch, and so long as you keep to the correct size, you can use any type of yarn, ply, fabric, colours, etc that you choose. This means if you are short of money, you can use fabric scraps or wool from charity stores, or anything that you can get your hands on. I do ask if you are stitching/embroidering or sewing a square, that you back your square and hem the edges so that your square will look neat and tidy in the blanket. This can be done by simple hand sewing around the edges if you do not have a sewing machine.

If you have been thinking about learning how to knit, crochet, sew, or embroider, this could be the extra push you need to get started! There are so many wonderful and easy tutorials on the Internet and You Tube. Your square does not need to be fancy. A simple knitted square in one colour or a crocheted granny square is perfect for the blankets! It’s been so wonderful that this project has inspired some women to start learning to crochet, or knit, or stitch, and I hope that for these women, this is the beginning of a more creative life. I believe that every one of us in this world is creative in some way or another.

The squares that I have been receiving in the mail are all so unique and beautiful in their own way, and it warms my heart to see so many squares coming from so far away as well! Some of the squares I have been receiving have come from New Zealand, the US, the UK, Portugal, Switzerland, Sweden, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands! As well as so many beautiful ones from here in Australia.

I have just received the last of the squares for the very first #littlesquaresofstrength blanket, and in the next few weeks I will be sitting in our caravan with a pot of tea, carefully stitching all of these squares together to make one big blanket of love and hope. This project will be ongoing, and I am looking forward with anticipation to receiving many more #littlesquaresofstrength for the next blankets!
