Our newest Featured Maker is Angela from Purl & Loop: a US company that handcrafts weaving and felting tools. We’re really keen to try out their new bracelet loom and are impressed with the many kits they offer for beginner weavers! Check out their online shop here and follow along with their Instagram account here. But first, meet the Purl & Loop Founder, Angela, below!
About Purl & Loop
Purl & Loop® specializes in contemporary fiber art supplies with a focus on needle felting and weaving. Purl & Loop is the creator of the Stash Blaster® and the new patent pending Swatch Maker 3-in-1 weaving looms. A recent product addition is our new Wee Weaver loom.
The Purl & Loop studio is housed in an East Downtown (EaDo) Houston within an artist community. It is here where all our products are created, assembled and hand finished. Our trusty laser cutting machine helps us crank out our creative ideas and allows us to adapt quickly to manufacturing demands. The materials we use for our products are sourced from Houston-based businesses whenever possible or purchased from U.S. and Canadian suppliers. Our products can be found in independent quilting, yarn and weaving shops across the country.
Five people and two dogs staff our small studio workshop. Angela Laswell Smith founded Purl & Loop in 2012 and serves as the creative director. Hector hand assembles, sands and varnishes the wood looms. Missy operates the laser machine, fulfills orders, packages our looms and kits and travels with Angela to trade shows. Martha varnishes any of our wood products and operates the laser machine. Our newest staff member, Jonathan, sands all our wood and varnishes a majority of our wood products. Our long serving canine team members are Audrey Pearl and Hank. They served as companions to Angela when she operated from her 100 sq. ft. home studio and they now serve as honorary staff and greeters in our much larger space. We are proud to pay our staff a living wage and canine staff receives deluxe housing and organic food and treats.
About the Founder
Angela Laswell Smith was raised in Springfield, Illinois. She graduated from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana with a degree in English and immediately joined the first group of Peace Corps Kazakhstan volunteers in Almaty, Kazakhstan. After leaving Peace Corps, she worked for a major accounting firm in Almaty, Kazakhstan until she returned to the U.S. to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for a Masters of Business Administration. Her MBA concentration was operations management and she always wanted to work in a manufacturing facility. That dream was finally achieved in January 2016 when Purl & Loop expanded into a much larger studio space and acquired their own laser cutting machine. Angela’s artistic passion is needle felting wool bowls but her professional passion is manufacturing products that serve the fiber arts community.
